As a high-energy “motivational speaker” (and I put that in quotes because I really do dislike that term) I sometimes get asked by my clients to deliver the following message to their employees: “Tell them what a great organization we are and how much we (we being the senior management team) care about them.”
And whenever I am asked to deliver this message, I firmly but respectfully explain that there is no way I can deliver that message and retain any credibility with my audience.
You see, the only way for employees to really get that message is to be shown it. It’s no better if the senior managers deliver the message themselves. Actions speak louder than words and talk is cheap. And if you really need to say it….well, it’s like the old saying goes, “If a lady has to tell everyone she’s a lady, then she’s no lady.” (Is that the old saying? I can’t remember, but you get the drift.)
So if you really, truly care about creating a great workplace for your employees and customers, then get busy showing them and forget the telling.
