Another Year, a Better Workplace Culture
Rather than thinking about just what you are going to do in your workplace this year,
I challenge you to think about HOW you are going to do things at work this year.
There is a huge opportunity to be had by out-behaving your competition!
So take this time to take stock of the how. HOW are you going to
treat your community, the environment, your customers and
your fellow employees? Here’s a few stats to remind you of
the need to create a more positive, engaged and fun workplace:
– A 10-year study by Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton of
200,000 managers and employees found that simply saying
“thank-you” lots at work translated into bigger profits
– From the Towers Perrin firm: Organizations with the most
engaged employees (they go above and beyond what’s expected
because they have a sense of purpose and passion for what they’re
doing), 90% of employees had no plans to leave; in the places
with low levels of engagement a whopping 50% of employees were
thinking about leaving
– Companies with the most engaged employees reported a 19%
increase in operating income
– More than 100 studies have confirmed a relationship between
employee engagement and performance
How you treat each other at work has an enormous impact beyond
dollars and cents of course. It effects everyone’s moods,
stress levels, happiness and overall well-being. So think about
the simple, small things you can do, and imagine the impact
over 1, 5 or even 10 years.
Mike’s Fun at Work Tip
It’s a new year, so it’s the perfect time to set some fun goals.
If you are serious about upping the fun factor at work, then
commit to a certain number of fun events spread out over the
course of the year. Start up that Fun at Work committee, or
assign a rotating (four months works great) corporate jester
position whose duty it is to inject some spontaneous fun into
the workplace and plan some celebratory events.
Quote of the Week
“Humor is the great thing, the saving thing, after all. The minute
it crops up, all our hardnesses yield, all our irritations and resentments slip away,
and a sunny spirit takes their place.”
