Getting More Creative By Getting Blue!

1. Wow, You BLUE My Mind!

According to a study published by the University of British
Columbia in the journal Science, we should perhaps consider
painting our meeting rooms blue. The study found that when
people need to focus their attention on detailed tasks such as
editing, then the color red works wonders, but for creative brainstorming,

blue vastly outperforms red. Groups exposed to
blue colors came up with twice as many creative ideas when
solving problems or generating ideas. So break out the blue
paint, the blue paper, the blue sweaters & the blueberry donuts!
2. Mike’s Fun at Work Tip

Last week we talked about “the fun theory” website and the idea
that “when you make things fun, things get done.” So if we want
to stay healthy this flu season and encourage folks to practice
flu-safe behaviors such as coughing and sneezing into their
elbows, avoiding hand shaking, and washing their hands vigorously,
then spread the word in a fun way. Several Hump Day readers sent
in their suggestions including: bump hips instead of shake hands; practice

“air” high-fives with a funny noise; and raise your left
arm and touch elbows when meeting someone (that way your arm is
also locked and loaded in case you have to sneeze or cough into
the crook of your arm). One person suggested everyone should just
do the fun dance when you meet new people, but were worried about
being carted off to an institution. In a random draw, the winning
entry is Dawn Lake at Alberta Health Services, whose workplace has
signs in the washrooms reminding people that to wash their hands
properly you should sing happy birthday twice. Most of us have
heard this advice before, however to ratchet up the fun factor,
their workplace has taken to enthusiastically singing happy
birthday twice OUT LOUD, so no one can cheat, everyone gets a
chuckle, and the message gets reinforced in a memorable way!
(As the lucky winner, Dawn will receive a copy of the fabulous
useful e-book “340 Ways to Put Humor to Work.”)
3. Deep Thought of the Week

“If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?”
4. It’s a Wacky World

October 28 is “Chocolate Day”!! Let the eating begin! This lofty
Holiday offers up the perfect excuse to buy some chocolates for
someone at work you’ve been meaning to thank since you started on
the job twelve years ago. (And do recall the survey I reported on
in 2008, that people who have candy on their desks are thought
to be more organized, smarter and more creative!)
