1. Does Michael travel to speak? How does he book his travel?
Of course! Michael travels all over the world researching, writing, and speaking about inspiring workplace cultures.
Typically the client books and pays for the hotel accommodation upfront. Depending on the distance traveled, there may be anywhere from 1 to 3 nights accommodation required.
We book our own airfare and always strive to find a reasonable rate. Within Canada, Michael books at an AirCanada Flex rate and never requests a business class seat. For overseas travel, because it’s important that Michal arrives well-rested and 100% raring to go, we will work with you to figure out a plan that ensures Michael flies business class.
And because we know you don’t like surprises and need to plan your event budget accordingly, and because we like to also keep things simple for both parties, we are also happy to:
2. How long does Michael speak for?
As long as you need him to. Michael does keynote presentations and longer, interactive training workshops.
Michael’s keynote presentation can be adjusted to suit your scheduling needs, but typically lasts anywhere from 45 to 120 minutes. One hour or 90 minutes is the most common length that clients typically request. (Our view is that you should take advantage of Michael`s energy and knowledge and make the most out of his time with you!)
Michael’s workshops vary from half day to full day presentations. For a half day workshop, Michael likes to have 3 to 4 hours (the fee is the same regardless of the length) while a full day workshop is anywhere from 5-8 hours.
Many clients take advantage of Michael’s wealth of expertise by hiring him for both a keynote presentation and a breakout workshop session, sometimes on the same topic, sometimes on a completely different topic. If Michael is traveling especially far then it makes sense again to maximize your time with him, get the best bang for your buck, and save on the costs of having to book another speaker for that time slot!

No problem! Based on your conference theme, audience, timing of the event, placement in your overall schedule, and your goals, Michael will suggest the perfect presentation for your group. And he is happy to “ix and match” different topics and themes from his various presentations to find the perfect blend for what you need!
4. How do we know Michael will be a match for us?
The last thing Michael ever wants to do is speak to a group that he is not a fit for. If Michael feels that he is not the best match for what you need, Michael will be pleased to recommend other speakers, trainers, or speaker bureaus that will be able to help you make your event a success.

6. Does Michael provide any resource materials?
For all his business-related presentations Michael provides participants with a whole suite of e-resources after the event that serve to remind people of the messages and offer relevant ideas on a number of topics. They include articles, summary handouts and checklists. They aren’t intended to be printed off, but rather to be shared electronically or posted on your intra-net site for access after the event.
And frankly, we know of no other speaker who provides this much follow-up content to their clients! Depending on the topic, these may include some or all of the following:
7. Does Michael sell his books or other products from the stage?
Michael never does a “hard sell” from the stage – he is there to deliver as much valuable information as he can in the allotted time, and he knows from experience watching other speakers that there’s nothing that’s more of a turnoff than a 10-minute hard sell from the stage!
However, if you want a long lasting and deep impact, and you want to make sure Michael’s ideas have a real affect on your workplace and business success, Michael’s books and DVDs provide incredible value to participants. So we encourage you to arrange a space for Michael to sell and sign books after his presentations. Participants always ask if he has brought books and are usually disappointed if he has none with him! What we find works best is if the introducer or emcee mentions that there are books and DVDs for sale.
We also offer very generous bulk discounts, so if you’d like to arrange to pre-purchase one of Michael’s books for everyone in the audience, please let us know. We offer a fabulous discount reserved only for our clients. Offering a book to each participant is a great way of adding value, they provide a memorable souvenir of the event, and it ensures that Michael’s great ideas get taken back to the workplace. (Of course, his books contain far more ideas than Michael can ever get to in a presentation!)
8. Some people on our committee are worried about the use of inappropriate humour, so what sort of humour does Michael use?
All of Michael’s humour is what he likes to call “safe humour.” In fact, one of Michael’s messages is that the type of humour used in a workplace should always be positive, healthy, and respectful humour – humour that laughs with people, never at people.
Remember, although Michael is a very funny speaker, he is not a stand up comedian, so he never uses inappropriate or offensive language, and never puts anyone on the spot.
9. Is Michael a funny business speaker or a business speaker who happens to be funny?
Yes!And what differentiates Michael from any other humour in the workplace speaker is this: Michael has worked as a senior manager, studied workplace theory for more than 25 years, interviewed CEOs and top leaders around the world from inspiring organizations, and has accumulated an immense wealth of knowledge and understanding of workplace issues. Michael is very results-oriented and is focused on delivering solid, relevant information, but delivering that information in a funny and memorable style.
10. Some of the committee wants lots of humour; others want to make sure the presentation is relevant with good solid information. How do we find the ideal balance?
Michael believes you don’t have to sacrifice fun for content, or vice versa. In fact, most of Michael’s clients praise his ability to deliver useful content in a fun, highly entertaining way.
But of course, depending on the goals, context, and the timing (for example, after dinner presentations usually demands a higher use of humour), the ratio of humour to “pure content” may shift accordingly and Michael will discuss this with you to make sure you achieve your desired outcome and goals.
11. Does Michael guarantee his presentations?
You bet. If you are not fully satisfied with the presentation or if the program did not achieve your stated goals, Michael will refund your entire fee. (It hasn’t happened yet!)
12. How does Michael structure his fees? Will it be less expensive to hire Michael to speak to us for only half an hour vs. a full hour?
Michael has three rates, one for a keynote presentation up to and including an hour and a half, a half day rate, and a full day workshop rate. Your investment includes all preparation and customization, resource materials, door prizes, and, depending on the size of the audience, a fun giveaway for audience members.
Michael, like most professional speakers, does NOT charge based on an hourly rate. Why? Because investing in one of Michael’s presentations can save you hundreds of thousands of dollars OR help you generate hundreds of thousands of dollars! You are investing in Michael’s expertise and the value he brings to your company or conference, so it’s not just about the time Michael is in front of your group. The tremendous value is based on the cumulative and extensive expertise, experience, and wisdom Michael brings to your audience, combined with the long term impact of his presentation.
13. Does Michael negotiate his fees?
Very rarely, and typically only if there is some exceptional reason to do so, or if Michael can trade services of an equivalent value to his fees to make up the difference.
Michael works with a number of clients and speaker bureaus, and so in fairness to his former clients, and to the speaker bureaus he works with, Michael needs to keep his fee consistent for the great value he offers. And because he is so in demand as an international business keynote speaker and workshop trainer, Michael doesn’t need to speak for free or at a reduced rate for “great exposure” because he is already well exposed!
14. Can we video tape his presentation for other employees to see?
That’s a great idea! That way you have a long term record of his presentation for future employees new to your organization or for employees who weren’t able to attend. As well, a recording is you’ll be able to refer back to as an energizing reminder of the ideas and presentation.
Because it’s Michael’s intellectual property we charge a very reasonable $1,000 additional licensing fee to record Michael’s presentations.
