1. Funny Execs Land Bigger Bonuses!
A study reprinted in the Harvard Business Review, conducted
by the Hay Group, found that business executives who ranked
as outstanding in their performance, used humor more than
twice as often as average performing executives.
Moreover, executives who used a lot of humor garnered,
on average, much larger bonuses than more serious
executives.

The study suggests that there is not, of course, a direct
relationship at work here between humor and success, but
rather that “humor is intertwined with, and appears to be a
marker for, a much broader managerial trait: emotional
intelligence.” It is believed that the effective use of
humor goes hand in hand with a high level of self-awareness
and the ability to empathize, and this combination is what
contributes to the success of the executives in the study.
And finally, as the study suggests, it is not about being
funny, but about how the humor is used, about paying attention
to how others respond to the humor and the message your are
sending through the humor.

2. Mike’s Fun at Work Tip
Create a quote of the day board, but instead of quoting
famous people, encourage employees or customers to create their
own witty quotes. After all, as George Bernard Shaw once said,
“I often quote myself, it adds spice to the conversation.”

3. Quote of the Week
“A leader without a sense of humor is like a lawn mower at a
cemetery – they both have a lot of people underneath them, but
no one is paying them any attention.” Bob Ross

4. It’s a Wacky, Wacky World
Talk about striking out, you’ve got to feel for this poor fellow:
a Pennsylvania man set out to break the world’s record for
bowling by bowling for 55 hours, 20 minutes straight.
Unfortunately, the officials at Guinness forgot to let him know
that someone had bowled three hours longer than him just a few
months earlier, but the record hadn’t been processed yet.
Happy Hump Day everyone. Keep laughing!
