The Hump Day Humor-Gram Issue #52, June 25, 2003

Please feel to frame this, paste it to
your boss’s forehead, make a kite
out of it or pass it along . . .

WARNING: May contain traces of
peanut oil.

In this issue . . .

1. Praise for Positive Praise
2. Mike’s Fun at Work Tip
3. Deep Thought of the Week
4. It’s a Wacky, Wacky World
1. Praise for Positive Praise

When was the last you praised a co-worker, customer, employee or
even, yes, your boss?

Offering a bit of positive praise is one of the easiest ways of
creating a more positive workplace environment. It’s also
one of the simplest ways of motivating folks, and giving yourself
a boost at the same time. As author Ken Blanchard says, we need
to “catch people in the act of doing something right.”

When you do offer someone praise, keep in mind these simple

– Do it in a timely manner.
– Keep it specific.
– Be sincere. (Hint: even you dog knows when you are not
being sincere).
– Be 100% positive.

Like Zza Zza Gabor once said, “Husbands are a lot like fires.
They go out if unattended.” Same thing when your employees feel
Unappreciated and unloved. In fact, according to one U.S. workplace
study, 41% of all employees leave their jobs because they feel

So remember that small gestures of thanks can go along way. Write
a hand written note, leave behind a humorous thank you card, a fun
sticker, a chocolate treat or, if anyone out there wants to thank ME,
why note send a long a blank cheque or money order to show your
appreciation? (Just kidding. Sort of. My address is 322
Canyon Close, Canmore, Alberta, T1W 1H4)
2. Mike’s Fun at Work Tip

Summer is the ideal time to hold an ice cream social –
scoop out ice cream cones for the staff, have managers dish out
sundaes to all the front line workers, bring some ice cream
along to your next staff meeting or dish it out to your customers.
3. Deep Thought of the Week

“There is nothing friendlier in the world than a wet dog.”

Bonus dog thought of the week . . .

“Be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.”
4. It’s a Wacky, Wacky World

Here’s a sure fire way NOT to motivate your employees: The
Department of Transportation in Illinois is asking members
of the public to rat out lazy workers. Yes, special bumper
stickers are being printed up with a toll free number for
folks to call in to if they witness any shovel-leaning,
cab-sleeping, coffee-drinking, donut-eating workers not at
work . . .

Happy Hump Day! May the farce be with you.
