The Hump Day Humor-Gram, January 11, 2006, Issue Number 160

Please note the Humpday and his faithful owner
will be taking a two-week hiatus (which isn’t nearly as
painful as it sounds). We’ll see you again February 1st!

1. It’s No Joke – Men and Women Really Are Different!

A Stanford University brain imaging study found that
women activate parts of their brains involved in language
processing and working memory more than men when they
read humor. Women also generated more intensity
in the parts of the brain that creates rewarding feelings
to new experiences. And whereas the men expected cartoons
to be funny from the onset, the women received
a greater reward when a truly funny cartoon was offered up.
I’m not sure what this means either, except that it goes to
show once again we need remember that women and men
obviously respond to different types of humor, and
appreciate humor in different ways. An interesting
additional finding in this study: the mesolimbic
(consider that your new word of the week) reward centre,
which creates rewarding feelings that follow events such
as cocaine use or financial gain, is also lit up by humor!

2. Mike’s Fun at Work Tip

Look for creative perks to brighten employees’ workdays.
Employees at BMC Software, for example, get the oil
changed in their cars while the cars are
patiently waiting for their owners to finish work.

3. Quote of the Week

“Against the assault of laughter nothing can stand,
not even the most colossal humbug.” Mark Twain

4. It’s a Wacky, Wacky World

A long standing mystery has finally been solved! Yes,
scientists have finally determined that Mona Lisa was smiling
because. . . wait for it. . . she was happy! Actually,
they got a little more specific that that. Using cutting edge
emotion recognition software, their computer determined that
she was 83% happy, 9% disgusted, 6% fearful and 2% angry
(probably from having to sit still all day holding 83% of
a smirk in place).

Happy Hump day! Hope you’re all at least 83% happy.
