Hoping for More Humor at Work

================================================================
1. Hoping For Humor

A study which appeared in the International Journal for Humor
Research suggests that humor can significantly increase a
person’s level of hope. Those study subjects that watched a 15
minute comedy video showed a statistically significant increase
in their scores on a hopefulness index. David Rosen, who led the
study, found that humor inhibits negative emotions, and helps
people discard automatic responses in favor of more creative
thoughts and actions.

(I hope this makes sense. And to improve my hopefulness,
I am now off to do something completely silly.)

2. Mike’s Fun at Work Tip

Hold a contest for the best work-related “sniglet.” A singlet is
a made up word that fills a need; a word that really ought to
be in the dictionary, but isn’t. The term was created by comedian
Rich Hall. Examples include: “hipatitis” – terminal coolness;
“pajangle” – waking up with your pajamas turned 180 degrees;
“pupkus” – the damp spot left behind after a puppy presses its
nose against a window; “deja-moo” – the feeling that you’ve
heard this bull before; “phonesia” – dialing a number and
then forgetting who it is you were calling just as they pick up
the phone; “assmosis” – the process by which you absorb success
by kissing up to the boss rather than working hard.

Try to come up with words for your particular workplace – terms
that might describe certain customers you get, or needs of
customers, words to describe a common workplace stressor or
challenge, words to describe what it is you REALLY do, or
words that describe a unique feature of a product or service
you provide.

4. It’s a Wacky, Wacky, World

If you ever feel overwhelmed by the number of decisions you
have to make at work, then might I suggest you take a break
and head for the nearest Starbucks, where, apparently, there
are only about 55,000 different possible combinations of coffee to
choose from. Ahhhhh. I can feel myself relaxing already . . .
as the men in white coats carry me out of Starbucks . . .

Happy hump day everyone. And please remember, next Hump Day,
March 26, is “Make Up Your Own Holiday” day, so please
plan accordingly!
