1. How Psychopathic is Your Organization?

The book and documentary “The Corporation: The Pathological
Pursuit of Profit and Power” by Joel Bakan has been getting
a lot of press recently. Bakan’s premise is that if a
corporation was a person, that person would show all the
traits of your basic psychopath: a callous disregard for
other’s feelings, an inability to maintain stable relationships,
an incapacity to feel guilt and a failure to conform to social
norms with respect to lawful behavior, and so on. Ouch!

I’ve often made the point that our workplaces DO have
personalities, and that we need to be more aware of what that
personality is. Would your clients, partners and employees, for
example, think of you as a sensitive, fun-loving, honest and
caring guy/gal who loves long walks, children and small puppies?
Or is your workplace persona closer aligned to a psychopath a la
Norman Bates lurking behind a shower curtain?

Although focussed on private companies, Bakan’s book and movie
provide a lot of serious food for thought about how we conduct
our affairs in ALL organizations. Your collective culture,
leadership style, client service, communications, values and
vision all serve to create a public persona,
and the more you embrace positive, healthy humour as a value
and a workplace tool, I would venture to say, the less likely
you are to be mistaken for a raging psychopath.

4. It’s a Wacky, Wacky World

In case you missed it (and you really should be keeping a better
tab on these things), last Monday was International Goof-Off Day.
A day for goofballs and goofing-offers and perhaps
even goofy people in general to unite and celebrate by,
well, doing nothing, I guess.

And if you did indeed forget to celebrate, take heart in the fact
that there is still plenty of time this week to get goofy, goof
off or even goof up.

Happy hump day everyone!
