1. Fun Works

More late-breaking research from the exciting, sometimes
dangerous, and always glamorous world of humor at work:

– Digital Equipment in Colorado Springs found that injecting
more fun in the workplace resulted in a 15% increase in
productivity and a 50% reduction in sick days!
– Harris and Associates polled 1,000-plus peak performers in
the U.S. and found that 75% of the respondents said the kind
of workplace they would be most reluctant to leave would be
one that promotes fun, trust and close working relationships.
– 91% of executives polled by Robert Half International
said that humor is important to career advancement.
– Finally, according to careerbuilder.com, 53% of workers feel
like they work with a bunch of monkeys.

2. Mike’s Fun at Work Tip

The best way to grow your sense of humor is to constantly be on
the look out for life’s everyday incongruities, so start a list
of strange absurdities you discover at your workplace. Here’s
the kind of everyday stuff I’m talking about:
– Why do traffic jams happen in RUSH hour?
– Why do we put suits in garment bags and garments in suitcases?
– Why is there a best-before date on SOUR cream?
– Why does Hawaii have interstate highways?
– If a mime is arrested, does he have the right to remain silent?
– How is it possible to “act natural”?

3. Quote of the Week

“Irony invites us to step down from our pedestals, to loosen our
anxious grip on life, to take ourselves a little less seriously,
and to be healed.” Anthony B. Robinson

4. It’s a Wacky, Wacky, World

And speaking of irony, here are some ironic tidbits listed in
in “The Big Book of Irony” by Jon Winokur:
– Coors beer heir Adolph Coors III was allergic to beer.
– The “Marlboro man” cigarette spokesman died of lung cancer.
– U.S. border patrol uniforms are made in Mexico.
– Supervisors in Tucson, Arizona held a closed meeting to
discuss Arizona’s open meeting law.

Happy Hump Day, and remember to laugh at yourself, or others will
volunteer to do it for you!
