1. The Big Rock Eddie’s

Big Rock Brewery, based in Calgary, Alberta, is a beer company that
knows how to make a splash, throw a bash, raise money for a good
cause, get people’s creative juices flowing and garner truckloads
of free publicity for their company. . .all at the same time.

They accomplish this through their highly successful annual
party/awards event, “The Big Rock Eddies.” This annual event
solicits amateurs from around the globe to produce their very own
beer commercial (and for the first time ever, folks were asked to
submit print ads, as well).

This year’s event (the 11th, held May 17)sold out in ten minutes
(with some 2,700 tickets on sale)and brought in over 300 amateur beer commercials. A panel of celebrity judges whittled the 300+ entries
down to the top 18 (including one co-produced and starring yours truly),
which are then screened before the crowd. The producers of the top 18
get the complete red carpet treatment, including a limo ride to the
front door, a red carpet (of course), and a barrage of questions from
the fake paparazzi (and for the record, no, I am not sleeping with
Jennifer Lopez).

The event is a great example of a business using a highly creative
and humorous approach for generating phenomenal public support and
good will, not to mention heaps of free media exposure. The event has
helped to cement Big Rock’s reputation as a company with deep community
roots, a good heart (all the money raised at the Eddie’s goes to
charities), and a healthy sense of humor.

So if you want a little laugh this Hump Day, cruise on over to and watch the three winning
entries (including the second place finish for a wacky little video
produced by the highly talented and wacky Tony Rino, and his partner
in crime, one Mike Kerr).
2. Mike’s Fun at Work Tip

The Eddie’s awards event is a great reminder of three great ways to add
Some humor and creativity to your workplace:

1. Hold fun awards events! People love awards shows, so turn it into
a real event, complete with a red carpet, smarmy mc and off-beat
awards tailored to your business or organization.

2. Give employees a chance to flex their creative juices through
fun contests. Contests like the Eddies and countless others
demonstrate how willing and hungry people are to flex their creative

3. Involve and include the public. Throw a party for your clients or
customers at least once a year, even if your only clients are
the folks from accounting down the hallway.
3. Quote of the Week

Too much of a good thing can be wonderful. Mae West
4. It’s a Wacky, Wacky World

Want to vent to someone but can’t find a willing ear to scream
into? This will no longer be a problem, now that a Maine
businessman has started a “Vent-Line,” where, for only $1.99
(USD), you can phone in and rant and rave to your heart’s content
about whatever topic you wish, while one Philip Doyen offers a
sympathetic ear.

Happy Hump Day all! May all you vents be found only in your walls.
