1. Relevant Humor Helps Avoid a Beauty Pageant Presentation
A “beauty pageant” refers to a presentation that is all style
over substance. It’s about creating the impression that a lot
of great information is being given out when in fact you are
drowning folks in déjà moo (“we’ve heard this bull before”)
with dazzlingly dizzying PowerPoint slides, few relevant
details, and the use of enormously large words that sound
impressive until you actually look them up in a dictionary.
One way to avoid a beauty pageant, whether it be in a formal
presentation, a staff meeting or in a sales pitch, is to get
real with your sense of humor. Use your sense of humor to
show people the real you and to connect in a meaningful way.
And to make sure you’re using relevant humor, focus first and
foremost on the most important facts/ideas/information your
audience needs to hear, and THEN get creative and explore how
those ideas can be delivered in a memorable, fun way. In other
words, think substance first, style later.
2. Mike’s Fun at Work Tip
Hold a contest for the wackiest “fake” laugh. It’s simple,
quick, easy to do, and everyone can participate. And remember,
even fake laughter has some of the same health benefits of real
laughter, so we should be encouraging people to laugh as much
as possible, even if they have to fake it until they make it!
And if you want to re-live the laughter, then make sure someone
either audio tapes or video tapes the proceedings (a montage of
everyone from the CEO to the mailroom employees laughing would
make a ridiculously fun video addition to any party or retreat).
