1. Don’t Put Up with the Put Down!

Two weeks ago we talked about a research finding from the Hay
Group that found that executives who used a lot of humor
tended to be more successful and even get bigger bonuses than
their more serious counterparts. An interesting side note in
the study was the finding that female executives used more
humor than male executives. As well, the females practiced more
positive, complimentary humor than the men. The male executives
tended to use more “put down” type of humor.

According to the study, many organizational psychologists
believe men use put down humor to maintain their hierarchical
status, while women use humor to downplay differences in status.

As we’ve said often here at the old Hump Day, positive humor
IS a great mechanism for levelling the hierarchy, tearing down
walls and maintaining positive relationships in the workplace.
So the women (At least the women in this study) seem to be
getting it right when it comes to the fine art of practicing
safe workplace humor.
2. Mike’s Fun at Work Tip

In Florida they have a “Fastest Hands in the East” contest wherein
hotel chambermaids compete in a bed-making speed contest, with
the winner winning $500.

So this week’s tip: Devise your very own, customized wacky
contest suited for your particular profession or office.
3. Quote of the Week

“There are three things which are real: God, human folly, and
laughter. The first two are beyond our comprehension, so we must
do what we can with the third.” John F. Kennedy
4. It’s a Wacky, Wacky World

German scientists have developed a cell phone that, when you blow
into it, will make a “pinging” noise if you have bad breathe.
(And just when you thought your cell phone could do darn near
everything . . .)

Happy hump day everyone!
