Workplace Lessons from Movies

One of the questions I pose in my e-book, Inspiring Questions for Inspiring Workplaces, is: If your workplace was represented by a movie, what movie would it be and why?  Asking questions like this sometimes helps reveal some uncomfortable truths that people are sometimes otherwise reluctant to share.

And speaking of movies…a lot of workplaces have business book clubs or recommend reading lists, but what about a recommended movie list that lists movies that illustrate a powerful message about workplace culture, business ethics or leadership?  Why not make that an assignment before your next team or leadership retreat, and have everyone share their insights and thoughts after watching the movie?

After watching the quirky little comedy Hector and the Search for Happiness, for example, I wrote a blog, In Search of Workplace Happiness summarizing some of the lessons Hector learns in the movie about that elusive creature known as happiness.

Leadership coaching expert Marshall Goldsmith writes in his latest book, Triggers, how he’s had at least 10,000 people watch the 1949 movie Twelve O’Clock High because of its brilliant illustration of situational leadership.

Fast Company magazine recently offered up a list of recommended business movies, including:citizen-kane-orson-welles

Great lessons in all those movies and great conversation fodder for your team. So what movie would you add to the list? What movie would you recommend to your team or your executive leadership a great movie to watch – one that offers a valuable insight, cautionary tale, or ethical dilemma that your team could sink its collective teeth into for a rip roarin’ debate?
