Small Moments, BIG Outcomes
Shares from Real Humans, Like YOU!
In 1980 I was swimming at a US collage with aspirations of making the Canadian Olympic team.
America boycotted the games, but Canada at the time, still planned to attend.
I left school early and travelled to Edmonton – a town I had never been and knew virtually no one. I was billeted with a family I did not know and swimming for a new coach.
During one of the early training sessions, one of my new teammates and national Team member, whom I admired but never spoken to, and didn’t think he knew who I was, said “Steve, good to have you here”. At that moment I felt part of the team and my decision was validated.
I’ll never forget how I felt. Never regretted my decision to move to Edmonton and to be part of that team.
A young salesman 40 plus years ago (me!) attending an otherwise boring meeting at my first company (Kellogg’s) when Zig Ziglar took the stage and left me with an indelible philosophy that helped guide me through 40 plus years of business – you will get what you want in life faster by helping others get what they want. Transformative in both my business and personal lives!!
My first job out of college, I was an account manager for a small fulfillment company. I was managing the company’s largest account. My customer treated me very poorly. Rude, demeaning, very inappropriate. I spoke to the owner of our company about it. She picked up the phone on the spot, called the customer and demanded 1. An apology. 2. A new contact to work with or she would resign the business. I was extremely grateful and to this day use her as an example of what it means to truly care for your employees.
I was volunteering on a regular basis with an organization. Due to COVID, I had to bow-out for a couple of years. On my return, I was quite nervous about fitting back in. On entering, a new employee approached and asked if they could help me. The office manager looked over and said “No, that’s Bruce. He belongs here.” Such a small statement and so powerful. I will never forget that simple, off-the-cuff comment.
My boss always made a point of walking around the office every morning (there were about 40 employees in this office) and saying a very intentional “good morning” to everyone and thanking us for coming into work. It felt sincere, never contrived, and WOW did it make a huge impact on everyone’s morale.
I’ll never forget the time a colleague phoned me at home just to check in on me after I had gone on extended stress leave. They were the only employees who called me, and it meant so much to me.
This may sound trivial, but as a new immigrant I was impressed by how my boss was so careful to learn how to pronounce my name properly and then took time out in a meeting to make sure everyone learned the proper pronunciation as well. It made me feel respected and like I had chosen the right company.

Other clients work with me because they’ve lost their mojo, they’re wrestling with unprecedented change, or they need help forging a stronger and more inspiring culture.
